Photos: 46th ECB(H) celebrates 91 years of service to nation

The 46th Battalion was initially designated as an Engineer Railway
Maintenance-of-Way Battalion in 1918 at Camp Sheridan, Ala. The
battalion is now based in Fort Polk, La., and its Company B is
based in Fort Rucker, Ala. Soldiers, officers and special guests of
the 46th ECB (H) assembled for the reverent, yet simple ceremony
to reflect on the unit’s long and proud history
at Camp Liberty, Iraq.
The “Guardian of the Spike.”
CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq – Command Sgt. Maj. Francis Thibodeau (left), hands a red
spike to 18 year-old Pfc. George Deems. Thibodeau and Deems are both
assigned to the 46th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), which currently serves
with Multi-National Division – Baghdad’s 926th Engineer Brigade, during a
ceremony here Dec. 7. As a tradition, Deems, a native of Malvern, Ark., will keep
the “Steel Spike” for a year until the new Guardian is revealed.

Soldier of the month.
CAMP LIBERTY, Iraq – Pfc. Matthew Boyle (right), a native of Syracuse, N.Y., who
serves with Headquarters and Support Company, 46th Engineer Combat Battalion
(Heavy), is congratulated by Cmd. Sgt. Maj. Daniel Zebrauskas (left), a native of
Chicago, Ill., who is the senior enlisted leader for the 926th Engineer Brigade,
Multi-National Division – Baghdad, following the 46th ECB (H) 91st birthday
ceremony here Dec. 7. Boyle, the battalion’s Soldier of the Month for December,
was chosen to recite the “Soldier’s Creed” during the ceremony.
